‘Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace’ Enthralls Jaipur Audience with Powerful Solo Performance

Ananya soch: The main auditorium of Rajasthan International Centre witnessed an emotionally rich theatrical evening on Saturday as the English play ‘Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace’ was staged before an appreciative audience. The powerful solo performance by acclaimed actress Jayati Bhatia left theatre lovers captivated with its layered storytelling and intense emotional depth.

The play is adapted from Stella Kon’s internationally acclaimed work ‘Emily of Emerald Hill’ and has been Indianised and directed by noted theatre personality Quasar Thakore Padamsee. Set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s Khoja community, the story traces the remarkable journey of Khatijabai — from an orphaned young girl to the commanding matriarch of the influential Karmali family.

Blending humour, emotional conflict and social commentary, the production explored themes of ambition, identity, family expectations and human relationships with remarkable sensitivity. The narrative highlighted the emotional sacrifices and inner struggles hidden behind social status and family prestige.

Jayati Bhatia’s commanding stage presence, expressive dialogue delivery and seamless portrayal of multiple emotional layers received loud applause from the audience. Her performance transformed the minimalist stage into a deeply immersive theatrical experience.

The Indian cultural context and contemporary undertones added further relevance to the play, making it relatable for modern audiences. The staging once again showcased Jaipur’s growing appetite for meaningful theatre and high-quality cultural performances.
