Rajasthan Rail Revolution! North Western Railway Creates New Record in Electrification, Solar Power and Fuel Savings

Ananya soch: North Western Railway (NWR) has achieved remarkable milestones in electrification, renewable energy and fuel conservation, marking a major step toward a greener and smarter railway network. The latest figures released for April 2026 reveal how the railway zone is rapidly transforming operations with modern technology, solar power and energy-efficient systems.

According to Chief Public Relations Officer Amit Sudarshan, the Bhagat Ki Kothi Electric Loco Shed has successfully commissioned 181 electric locomotives so far, including 78 WAP-7 and 103 WAG-9 HC locomotives. This achievement is being seen as a strong indicator of the railway zone’s growing dependence on clean and efficient electric traction.

80% Passenger Trains Now Running on Electric Traction

In a significant operational shift, nearly 226 pairs of passenger trains across all four railway divisions are currently running on electric traction, accounting for around 80 percent of total passenger train operations in the zone. At the same time, nearly 61 percent of freight transportation is also being carried out through electric traction, reducing diesel dependency and operational costs.

Solar Energy Produces Big Savings

The railway’s focus on green energy has also delivered impressive results. During April 2026 alone, solar power plants generated nearly 15.80 lakh units of electricity. Officials said shutting down diesel locomotives during idle time helped save around 509 kilolitres of fuel, resulting in savings of nearly ₹4.72 crore.

Rooftop Solar and Smart Safety Systems Expanding Fast

North Western Railway is also accelerating rooftop solar projects in Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions. By April 2026, commissioning work for 348 kilowatts of solar capacity had already been completed.

Apart from energy conservation, NWR is rapidly expanding modern railway technologies such as the Kavach safety system, LED headlights and air-conditioned locomotive cabins to improve operational efficiency and passenger safety.

With electrification and renewable energy becoming the backbone of railway operations, North Western Railway is steadily emerging as one of India’s leading green railway zones.
