The Rajasthani Folk Singer Who Mixed English Beats With Desert Tunes and Became the ‘Mashup Queen’
Singer rajnigandha shekhawat Quit her job after ‘Ghoomar’ mashup went viral, has performed at 500+ international shows, and now dreams of collaborating with Taylor Swift
Ananya soch: Ever wondered what happens when Rajasthan's earthy folk melodies meet English chart-toppers? Singer rajnigandha shekhawat decided to find out — and the result changed her life forever. She was initially scared people would mock the experiment, but the response was so overwhelming that the Jodhpur press crowned her the "Mashup Queen." Here's her incredible journey, in her own words.
Was There Fear of Being Mocked for the First Mashup?
Q: When you first thought of mixing Rajasthani folk music with English songs, were you worried about how people would react?
Absolutely, she admits. The first time she blended English and Rajasthani lyrics into a mashup, she feared people would find it strange or even laugh at her, since nothing like it had ever been tried before. But the moment the song went online, the views it received were unlike anything her earlier solo tracks had ever gotten.
She was already singing Rajasthani folk music, but combining it with English tracks won her massive encouragement. Soon, audiences at live shows started demanding the same mashup performances. Around this time, the Jodhpur press dubbed her the "Mashup Queen" — a title that quickly caught on with fans everywhere.
The 'Ghoomar' Mashup That Made Her Quit Her Job
Q: After 'Cheap Thrills-Ghoomar', what was the biggest turning point in your life?
This is the question that brings out real emotion. The biggest change, she says, was having to quit her day job. Show bookings poured in so fast that balancing a full-time career with performances became impossible.
Interestingly, her song "Badri Ki Dulhania" had already released earlier, but it was the "Cheap Thrills-Ghoomar" mashup video — which featured her face — that truly put her on the map. Before that, she used to sing classics by Shamshad Begum and Noor Jehan at music gatherings. But after this mashup, audiences wanted nothing but her original fusion tracks. Nine years on, she remains the only artist doing English-Rajasthani mashups of this kind.
500+ International Shows, Singing for Soldiers in Leh Tops the List
Q: What has been the most special moment across your 500+ international performances?
For her, the most beautiful moments come when everyone — from the eldest listener to the youngest child — lights up while listening to her songs, no matter the location. At destination weddings in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur, even foreign guests are seen dancing to her mashups, as she gets the crowd moving to Ghoomar and "Lejo" beats.
But recently, performing for Indian soldiers in Leh turned out to be the most emotional and unforgettable experience of her career.
Dreams of Collaborating With Taylor Swift, Arijit Singh
Q: If you got the chance to collaborate with a major global artist, who would you choose?
Without hesitation, she names Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh, and Sonu Nigam as dream collaborators from India. Internationally, she's a huge fan of Taylor Swift, BTS, and Ed Sheeran. Given the opportunity, she'd love to create a unique fusion of Rajasthani folk music with these global superstars too.
From the sands of Rajasthan to international stages, her story proves that the right blend of folk tradition and modern music can take any artist to extraordinary new heights.
