Jaipur Set to Witness a Theatrical Masterpiece: The Pain of ‘Tamas’ and the Emotional Turmoil of ‘Aadhe Adhure’ to Captivate Audiences

Ananya soch: The Pink City is all set to become the cultural heartbeat of India this weekend as the National School of Drama (NSD) Repertory Company brings its much-awaited Summer Theatre Festival 2026 to Jaipur. Theatre enthusiasts, literature lovers, and art connoisseurs are eagerly awaiting the staging of two iconic productions — ‘Tamas’ and ‘Aadhe Adhure’ — at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC) on June 6 and 7. More than just theatrical performances, these productions promise an emotional journey through history, society, and human relationships. The festival, running under NSD’s annual Summer Theatre initiative, has already earned praise across the country, and its Jaipur chapter is expected to draw significant attention. Based on the celebrated novel by Bhisham Sahni, ‘Tamas’ revisits the haunting memories of India’s Partition. Adapted by Asif Ali and Chittaranjan Tripathy, and directed by Tripathy himself, the play portrays the pain of displacement, communal tensions, and the human cost of one of history’s most tragic events. Powerful performances, thought-provoking dialogues, and evocative stagecraft transport audiences into a period that forever changed millions of lives. Adding further depth is the soulful musical composition featuring the timeless verses of Kabir alongside poignant poetry by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, creating an emotionally immersive experience. On the second day, audiences will witness ‘Aadhe Adhure’, one of the most influential works in modern Indian theatre. Written by Mohan Rakesh and originally directed by the late Tripurari Sharma, the play explores fractured relationships, emotional conflicts, and unfulfilled aspirations within a middle-class family. A special highlight of this revival is the return of original cast members Ravi Khanvilkar and Pratima Kanan, who will once again portray their memorable roles nearly three decades after the play’s first staging. With both productions receiving widespread acclaim from critics and audiences nationwide, Jaipur’s theatre lovers are expected to witness a rare blend of historical reflection and contemporary relevance. The festival is poised to leave audiences emotionally stirred long after the curtains fall.
