Vantara Launches World’s First Global University for Wildlife and Veterinary Sciences
Purpose-Led Institution to Position India as a Global Hub for Conservation Education
Ananya soch: Vantara, the wildlife conservation initiative founded by Anant Ambani, has announced the launch of Vantara University in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Conceived as the world’s first integrated global university dedicated exclusively to wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences, the institution seeks to place India at the forefront of conservation-focused education.
Backed by Reliance Industries, the university has been envisioned as a modern-day Gurukul that combines India’s ancient knowledge traditions with contemporary scientific learning. Its core mission is to prepare a new generation of professionals equipped to address the growing challenges of wildlife care, veterinary medicine, ecosystem health, and biodiversity conservation.
Inspired by Nalanda and Rooted in Compassion
Speaking on the occasion, Anant Ambani said that the university has emerged from his personal experiences of witnessing animals in distress and understanding the urgent need for stronger systems of care and conservation.
Inspired by the spirit of Nalanda University and the ancient Sanskrit ideal “Ā no bhadrāḥ kratavo yantu viśvataḥ” — “Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions” — the university aims to build a culture of compassion, knowledge, and service toward all living beings.
The symbolic foundation ceremony reflected this philosophy. Two Bijoliya sandstone blocks, sourced from the ancient Vindhyan formation associated with Nalanda, were incorporated into the foundation site, representing India’s timeless legacy of learning.
A Campus Built on India’s Natural Heritage
The ceremony, conducted according to Hindu traditions, brought together educators, conservationists, scientists, and public figures. Soil, water, and stones collected from forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, and Himalayan landscapes across India were ceremonially placed at the site, symbolising the country’s ecological diversity and the university’s connection to nature.
Courses, Research and Global Collaboration
Vantara University will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and specialised programmes in wildlife medicine, surgery, nutrition, genetics, epidemiology, One Health, behavioural sciences, conservation policy, and animal habitat design.
The institution will feature advanced clinical and academic infrastructure, international collaborations, a residential campus, and research-driven learning. Scholarships for students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, along with the “Every Life Matters” scholarship and “Founding Fellows” initiative, were also announced.
More than an academic institution, Vantara University aims to become a global platform where science, compassion, and conservation come together to protect every form of life.
