Flirt’ Opens 8th Rajrangam Festival with an Emotional Tale of Love and Silence

Ananya soch: The 8th Rajrangam Festival began on a vibrant theatrical note at Jawahar Kala Kendra with the staging of the play ‘Flirt’. Organized jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Actors Theatre at Rajasthan, the opening-day performance received an enthusiastic response from theatre lovers.

Based on a story by Padma Shri awardee Narendra Kohli, the play was directed by Ustad Bismillah Khan Award-winning theatre director Gagan Mishra, while Vikas Parik adapted the story for stage. The production explored the emotional complexities of love, highlighting how accepting love is as important as expressing it.

A Story of Misunderstood Emotions

The play revolves around Malini, a cheerful and free-spirited office employee, and her colleague Mr. Verma, who mistakes her friendly nature for romantic affection. Despite repeated invitations to movies, restaurants and his birthday celebration, Malini politely rejects Verma’s proposals, though she casually socializes with other colleagues. Hurt and confused, Verma gradually begins to see her as a “flirt.”

The story takes an emotional turn when Verma decides to move on and personally invites Malini to his wedding. Unable to hide her feelings any longer, Malini confesses that she has always loved him but remained silent due to societal hesitation and shyness. The emotional climax leaves the audience reflecting on communication and emotional honesty in relationships.

Strong Performances Win Hearts

Priyadarshini Mishra impressed as Malini, while Vishal Bhatt delivered a convincing performance as Verma. Abhishek Jhankal, Mahmood Ali and Gagan Mishra added energy and humour to the production. Lighting by Vimal Meena and sound coordination by Kamal and Ashish enhanced the overall theatrical experience.

The second day of the festival will feature the folk theatre presentation ‘Gopichand Bhartrihari’ directed by Dilip Bhatt and the satirical play ‘Tartuffe’ directed by Chinmay Das.
