Rajasthan’s Phad & Pichwai Art Shine in Delhi: ‘Sacred Aesthetics’ Exhibition Captivates Audiences at Bikaner House

Ananya soch:  Rajasthan’s timeless artistic heritage took center stage in the national capital as a special exhibition titled ‘IndiArt: Sacred Aesthetics’ was आयोजित at Bikaner House, Delhi. Organized by Jaipur-based startup Rooftop, the exhibition showcased the traditional Phad and Pichwai paintings, drawing art lovers, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts in large numbers.

The exhibition featured remarkable works by master Phad artist Prakash Joshi and renowned Pichwai artist Mukut Joshi. A total of 17 Phad and 13 Pichwai paintings were displayed, reflecting centuries-old traditions, spiritual depth, and intricate craftsmanship that define Rajasthan’s artistic identity.

Phad painting, historically created on large scrolls, has been used as a visual storytelling medium by priest-singers of Rajasthan’s Rabari and other communities. These artworks vividly depict religious narratives and folklore. On the other hand, Pichwai art is celebrated for its fine detailing, vibrant colors, and devotional themes, often associated with temple traditions. Mukut Joshi’s works beautifully captured this elegance and spiritual symbolism.

Both artists belong to the illustrious Joshi lineage, which has preserved and promoted these art forms for generations. Prakash Joshi, with over three decades of experience, has received prestigious honors including the National Award (President’s Award) in 2009 and the Kala Mani Award in 2010. His works are housed in prominent institutions like the National Archives, New Delhi, and the Indira Gandhi National Museum of Mankind, Bhopal. Mukut Joshi, active in Pichwai art for over 14 years, has skillfully blended tradition with contemporary aesthetics.

A New Perspective on Traditional Art
The ‘Sacred Aesthetics’ exhibition went beyond religious contexts, presenting Phad and Pichwai as significant cultural and fine art expressions. The event witnessed participation from art patrons, cultural figures, and students, all of whom appreciated the initiative.

Rooftop founder Kartik Gaggar stated that the organization aims to bring India’s rich artistic traditions to a wider audience. This exhibition not only revives age-old art forms but also highlights their relevance in today’s world, offering visitors an immersive cultural experience.
