India’s First Platinum Green Government Hospital! How Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Turns Sunlight & Fresh Air into Life-Saving Healthcare

Ananya soch: In a groundbreaking achievement for India’s public healthcare sector, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has earned the prestigious Platinum Rating for green healthcare facilities from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). With this recognition under the ‘PGI Extension of Nehru Hospital’ project, PGIMER has become the first government hospital in India to receive IGBC’s highest sustainability certification.

A Vision Rooted in History, Now Recognized Nationally

The hospital’s main building, inaugurated by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is popularly known as Nehru Hospital. Designed with climate-responsive architecture long before sustainability became a buzzword, the building allows direct sunlight during winter months and natural cross-ventilation during summer, minimizing energy consumption while maximizing patient comfort.

This thoughtful architectural planning has not only reduced the hospital’s carbon footprint but also improved healing environments for patients. Today, that legacy has been formally recognized with the IGBC Platinum certification.

A Super-Specialty Hub for Cancer & Diabetes Research

PGIMER Chandigarh is one of North India’s largest tertiary healthcare institutions, receiving a significant number of cancer patients annually. Alongside advanced oncology treatment, the institute is actively conducting research in diabetes and metabolic disorders to develop improved treatment strategies.

Medical leaders emphasize that the integration of green infrastructure with advanced clinical research sets PGIMER apart as a model for future public hospitals across India.

Delegation Visit Highlights Healthcare Excellence

During a recent visit, a delegation was welcomed by Prof. Vipin Kaushal, Medical Superintendent, who provided an overview of the institute’s clinical services, patient-care systems, and modernization efforts aimed at strengthening public healthcare delivery.

Dr. Naveen Pandey from the Hospital Administration Department presented the performance and impact of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Since 2019, PGIMER has treated a substantial number of beneficiaries under the scheme, establishing itself among India’s leading public tertiary care centers.

Annual Ayushman Bharat Treatment Statistics at PGIMER

Department Patients Treated (Annual)
Medical Oncology 56,080
General Medicine 42,870
Cardiology 15,050
Neurosurgery 13,500
Orthopedics 11,220
Kidney Transplants 211

The data reflects PGIMER’s critical contribution to specialized and life-saving treatments under India’s flagship health insurance program.

Court-Directed Penalties Funding Free Treatment

In an innovative welfare initiative, PGIMER provides free treatment to underprivileged patients using funds generated through court-imposed fines. The Punjab and Haryana High Court directs convicted individuals to deposit compensation or penalty amounts into a designated medical assistance fund.

While Ayushman Bharat covers eligible beneficiaries, patients without valid cards and lacking financial resources are supported through this judicially backed fund. This initiative represents a powerful collaboration between the judiciary and healthcare system to ensure no patient is denied advanced treatment due to financial constraints.

Rising Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders Raise Alarm

Prof. Sanjay Bhadada, Head of the Endocrinology Department, expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of diabetes and metabolic bone diseases. He stressed the need for preventive healthcare awareness, early diagnosis, and research-based interventions to address India’s growing burden of lifestyle-related illnesses.

From climate-smart architecture and IGBC Platinum certification to pioneering cancer research and inclusive healthcare funding, PGIMER Chandigarh stands as a national symbol of sustainable, equitable, and future-ready healthcare infrastructure.
