Historic Shift in Bengal Politics: Suvendu Adhikari Set to Become West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister

Ananya soch: West Bengal has witnessed a historic political transformation as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of the state. The announcement was made during the BJP Legislature Party meeting by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who stated that every proposal unanimously supported Suvendu Adhikari’s name. Adhikari will take oath on May 9 at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground, becoming the first-ever BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal.

BJP Registers Landslide Victory in 2026 Assembly Elections

The BJP secured a sweeping victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections by winning more than 200 seats, bringing an end to the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The result is being seen as one of the biggest political upsets in the state’s history.
Suvendu Adhikari further strengthened his political stature by defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her stronghold Bhabanipur, adding to his earlier victory against her in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly Elections. Political observers have now begun referring to him as the “Giant Killer” of Bengal politics.

Modi and Amit Shah Extend Full Support

Speaking after the meeting, Amit Shah praised Adhikari’s leadership and campaign strategy, saying that he not only won the election but also created a massive BJP wave across Bengal. Shah added that the new government would focus on development, good governance, and the vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Adhikari through video conferencing and assured complete support from the Central Government for Bengal’s growth and progress.

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony Planned

Sources indicate that two Deputy Chief Ministers may also take oath alongside Suvendu Adhikari in order to ensure balanced regional and community representation in the government. However, the official list of ministers is yet to be announced. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to witness the presence of several senior BJP leaders and thousands of supporters from across the state.

Law and Order Among Top Priorities

The new Chief Minister will face immediate challenges, particularly in controlling post-poll violence and restoring law and order. The recent killing of Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, triggered nationwide outrage. Adhikari described the incident as a “pre-planned conspiracy” and vowed strict action against those responsible.
The upcoming BJP government is expected to prioritize industrial growth, employment generation, infrastructure development, and anti-corruption measures, which were key promises during the election campaign.

From TMC Minister to BJP’s Face in Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari’s political journey has been remarkable. Once a senior minister in the TMC government, he joined the BJP in late 2020 and quickly emerged as the party’s strongest leader in Bengal. From the Nandigram movement to grassroots political mobilization, Adhikari played a crucial role in strengthening BJP’s presence across rural Bengal, especially in Medinipur and North 24 Parganas.

Opposition Questions BJP’s Rise

The TMC reacted sharply to the announcement, with several party leaders alleging a “Central conspiracy” behind BJP’s rise in Bengal. Meanwhile, Congress and Left parties also vowed to challenge the new government, although their political influence in the state currently remains limited.

Bengal Looks Ahead to a “New Era”

Political analysts believe that Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership could mark the beginning of a new political and economic chapter in West Bengal. With a focus on reforms, investment, youth opportunities, and governance, the BJP aims to transform the state into a prosperous “Sonar Bangla.”
In his first statement after being elected leader, Suvendu Adhikari said, “This is not my personal victory; this is the victory of the people of Bengal. We will work together for the development of the state. Violence will not be tolerated, and development will reach everyone.”
