CBSE Mandates Third Language for Class 6 from Academic Session 2026–27

Schools Directed to Implement R3 Within 7 Days

CBSE Mandates Third Language for Class 6 from Academic Session 2026–27

Ananya soch: In a significant move aimed at strengthening multilingual education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made the third language (R3) compulsory for students from Class 6 starting the academic session 2026–27. As per a circular issued on April 9, 2026, the board has termed the directive “immediate and mandatory,” instructing all affiliated schools to implement it within seven days.

Schools that have not yet introduced the third language are required to comply within the stipulated timeline. In cases where prescribed textbooks are not readily available, institutions have been advised to begin teaching using local resources or alternative study materials.

Aligned with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023

The decision is part of the broader implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. Under the three-language formula, students must study at least two Indian languages, while the third language (R3) must be different from the first (R1) and second (R2) languages.

This policy aims to promote linguistic diversity, cultural understanding, and cognitive development among students from an early stage of education.

Clear Guidelines and Monitoring Mechanism

CBSE has directed its regional offices to collect detailed information from schools regarding the languages being offered as R3 and to ensure strict compliance. Schools will be closely monitored to guarantee timely and effective implementation of the directive.

While certain exemptions may be granted to students returning from abroad, the policy remains broadly applicable to all students enrolled in CBSE-affiliated schools.

Impact on Future Academic Structure

CBSE has also clarified that this three-language structure will extend to Classes 9 and 10 in subsequent years, though the rollout will begin with Class 6. Schools across the country have already started preparations, and students, along with parents, are gearing up for the transition. For further details, stakeholders are advised to contact their respective schools or visit the official CBSE website.
