50 Years, Millions of Memories! Jaipur’s Iconic ‘Raj Mandir’ to Celebrate Golden Jubilee With FREE Screenings of Bollywood’s Most Legendary Films
Entertainment desk: From Endless Ticket Queues to a Grand Nostalgic Comeback: Why June 1 Will Become a Historic Day for Cinema Lovers in Jaipur
Ananya soch: More than just a cinema hall, Raj Mandir has been the heartbeat of Jaipur’s cinematic culture for five decades. Known across India and abroad as “The Showplace of the Nation,” the legendary theatre is now preparing to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, completing an extraordinary journey of 50 glorious years.
To mark this historic milestone, Raj Mandir management has announced a spectacular celebration for movie lovers. On Sunday, June 1, audiences will get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch five iconic Bollywood classics absolutely free on the grand silver screen that has hosted generations of unforgettable memories.
The announcement has already created excitement across Jaipur, as people prepare to relive the golden era of cinema inside one of India’s most beautiful theatres.
A Theatre That Became Jaipur’s Cultural Identity
Raj Mandir was inaugurated on June 1, 1976, by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Haridev Joshi. The very first film screened here was “Charas,” starring Dharmendra and Hema Malini.
Over the years, Raj Mandir transformed from a cinema hall into an emotion for Jaipur residents. Its royal architecture, dazzling chandeliers, pink interiors and larger-than-life cinematic experience made it one of the most admired theatres in the country. Tourists visiting Jaipur often included Raj Mandir in their travel itinerary, even if they were not planning to watch a film.
For many families, watching a movie here became a tradition passed down through generations.
“We Saw Emotions More Than Films”
The real story of Raj Mandir lives not only on its screen but also behind it. Employees who have spent decades working here say they witnessed emotions more than movies.
From couples arriving for their first date to families celebrating milestones together, Raj Mandir became a silent witness to countless life moments. Projectionists changing reels, ticket collectors tearing paper tickets by hand, and canteen staff rushing during intervals—all of them collectively built the soul of this iconic theatre.
Kishore Kumar Kala, who has been associated with Raj Mandir for nearly 50 years, said the theatre originally had 1,168 seats, but to provide better comfort and larger seating, the capacity was later reduced to 862 seats. Despite modernization, its charm has remained untouched.
According to management, more than 400 films have been screened here over the decades, with movies starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan enjoying massive popularity.
These Films Ran for 75 Weeks Straight
Raj Mandir in-charge Ankur Khandelwal revealed that “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” and “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!” each ran continuously for 75 weeks at the theatre. Back then, audiences would plan movie outings weeks in advance, while long queues outside the ticket window became a common sight. Today, tickets may be booked online, but the nostalgia of those golden cinema days still lives in people’s hearts.
Golden Jubilee Celebration: Full Day Movie Festival
As part of the celebrations, Raj Mandir will host a special free film festival throughout the day. Entry for all shows will remain free, and tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis through BookMyShow and the theatre counter.
