Vantara and Gujarat Forest Department Reintroduce Spotted Deer to Boost Biodiversity in Banni Grasslands

Ananya soch: Vantara and Gujarat Forest Department Reintroduce Spotted Deer to Boost Biodiversity in Banni Grasslands: In a key step toward enriching the wildlife diversity of the Banni Grasslands, the Gujarat Forest Department, in collaboration with Vantara, has reintroduced 20 spotted deer into a 70-hectare protected zone. Vantara is a premier wildlife conservation initiative led by Anant Ambani and operates the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Jamnagar.
The spotted deer were carefully translocated from Vantara’s ex-situ facility in Jamnagar to the Banni Grasslands using specially designed ambulances. Their release was carried out under the direct supervision of the Forest Department, with Vantara offering critical logistical and technical support in line with established conservation protocols.
Ahead of the reintroduction, a joint field assessment was undertaken by experts from both Vantara and the Forest Department to ensure habitat readiness and outline future restoration strategies. The exercise involved wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and forest officials working together to align efforts with Gujarat’s broader conservation goals.
Dr. Brij Kishor Gupta, Director of the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, said: “This initiative highlights the power of collaboration in conservation. By combining field expertise, veterinary care, and scientific research, we are taking concrete steps to strengthen biodiversity in the Banni Grasslands.”
Spanning 2,618 sq. km in Kutch district, the Banni Grasslands are among Asia’s largest and most vital grassland ecosystems. Home to 12 mammal species—including Indian gazelle, Indian wolf, golden jackal, striped hyena, nilgai, and Indian fox—the region plays a critical role in Gujarat’s ecological landscape. The Forest Department continues to lead restoration efforts in Banni, including the revival of native grasses, control of invasive species, and improvement of degraded areas.
The reintroduction of the spotted deer marks a significant milestone in the mission to restore ecological balance in the region. Vantara remains a committed partner, bringing scientific knowledge, veterinary expertise, and infrastructure support to reinforce government-led conservation efforts.
Together, these ongoing initiatives are helping safeguard India’s natural heritage and revitalizing one of its most precious ecosystems.
