Jaipur’s Gagan Mishra Earns Prestigious Culture Ministry Fellowship, Set to Unlock the Hidden Science of Theatre Lighting
In a proud moment for Rajasthan’s cultural community, renowned Light Designer and Bismillah Khan Awardee Gagan Mishra has been selected for the prestigious CCRT Senior Fellowship, where he will conduct a two-year research project on the evolution and impact of Theatre Lighting.

Acclaimed Light Designer and Bismillah Khan Award recipient Gagan Mishra has been selected for the prestigious Senior Fellowship Scheme of the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
The selection was made by an expert committee that identifies researchers working on innovative and significant subjects in the field of Indian art and culture. Under this fellowship, Gagan Mishra will undertake a comprehensive two-year research project titled “Analytical Study of Traditions and Forms of Lighting in Theatre.”
The research will focus on the evolution of Stage Lighting, examining various lighting patterns, forms, techniques, and their artistic and psychological impact on theatrical performances. Experts believe the study could become an important reference for theatre practitioners, directors, designers, and performing arts institutions across the country.
Over the years, Gagan Mishra has established himself as one of the most active and respected professionals in the field of Lighting Design. Apart from his work in Theatre in Education, he has contributed to numerous national and international cultural events.
His notable assignments include the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Sanskrit Conference in Thailand under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and the World Social Forum in Dubai. He has also been associated with major festivals organized by the National School of Drama (NSD), Sangeet Natak Akademi, Kathak Kendra, Rajasthan Tourism Department, and the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Rajasthan.
Mishra has collaborated with some of India’s most distinguished theatre directors, actors, Kathak and Bharatanatyam performers, folk artists, and cultural practitioners. His latest achievement is being viewed as a recognition not only of his individual contribution but also of Rajasthan’s growing influence in the performing arts sector.
As he begins this ambitious research journey, the theatre world will be watching closely to see how his findings reshape the understanding of lighting as a powerful storytelling tool on stage.
