From Dinosaurs to Deep Space: PIB Jaipur Media Delegation Explores India’s Largest Edutainment Science Hub in Kapurthala
72 Acres of Innovation: A Landmark Visit to Punjab’s Premier Science Destination
Ananya soch: A media delegation from PIB Jaipur visited the iconic Pushpa Gujral Science City in Kapurthala, Punjab, gaining first-hand insight into one of India’s largest and most ambitious science communication projects. Spread across 72 acres on the Jalandhar–Kapurthala highway, the Science City has been established with the objective of promoting scientific temper, nurturing curiosity among students, and inspiring innovation through the powerful concept of “edutainment” — education through entertainment. During the visit, Public Relations Officer Mr. Ashani Kumar briefed the delegation about the vision behind the project. He emphasized that the Science City aims to make science accessible, experiential, and engaging for people of all age groups, moving beyond traditional classroom learning to immersive, hands-on experiences.
A Globe-Shaped Marvel: The Spectacular Space Theatre
One of the most striking attractions at the Science City is its state-of-the-art Space Theatre. Housed in a magnificent globe-shaped building, the theatre features 328 seats and an enormous screen that is nearly ten times larger than a standard 35 mm screen.
The exterior of the structure is clad with 2.5 million computer-designed tiles, making it an architectural marvel in its own right. Inside, visitors are transported into the depths of space through high-resolution visuals and immersive sound systems, offering an unforgettable journey across galaxies, planets, and cosmic phenomena.
-Digital Planetarium: A Journey Through the Stars
The Digital Planetarium, equipped with a multi-channel digital projection system, offers a breathtaking simulation of the night sky. Visitors can observe constellations, planetary movements, seasonal changes in celestial bodies, and astronomical events in a realistic environment. This facility not only enhances understanding of astronomy but also sparks curiosity among young learners, making complex cosmic concepts easier to grasp.
Virtual Expedition and 3D Adventures: Technology Meets Thrill
The 30-seat Virtual Expedition Flight Simulator is another major highlight. It provides thrilling experiences ranging from space travel simulations to roller coaster rides and high-speed racing tracks. The simulator creates a realistic sensation of motion, giving visitors a taste of adventure powered by advanced technology.
The Virtual 3D Show further elevates the experience with objects that appear to leap out of the screen, combined with dramatic sound and lighting effects. Meanwhile, the Indoor Laser Show blends sound, light, and mist to create a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates audiences of all ages.
Space Gallery and Fun Science: Learning Made Interactive
The Space Gallery (Cosmos) showcases satellites, the solar system, space launch vehicles, the possibility of life in space, and applications of space technology in everyday life. It provides a comprehensive overview of humanity’s journey into space exploration. The Fun Science Gallery features nearly 100 interactive exhibits demonstrating fundamental scientific principles such as gravity, optics, acoustics, and energy. These hands-on models allow visitors to experiment and learn by doing — a core element of the edutainment philosophy.
The Virtual Reality and Cyber Space section is equally engaging, explaining the working of the internet, computers, and digital technologies in an entertaining and easy-to-understand manner.
Amazing Living Machine and Dinosaur Park: Science Comes Alive
The Health Gallery, known as the “Amazing Living Machine,” houses a 12-foot-tall working model of the human heart. Visitors can observe the process of blood circulation and understand the complexities of the human body through interactive displays. The Dinosaur Park, one of the largest in the country, features 44 life-sized dinosaur models. Some are installed beneath a volcano-like structure and include sound and motion effects, recreating a dramatic prehistoric environment that fascinates children and adults alike.
